Mexico: Orange prices expected to fall

Contrary to the expectations that citrus growers had about having a season with better prices per ton of orange, predictions are that there will be a fall in this fruits price within the domestic market.

Marketing processes haven't changed as the product is still being sold at 700 pesos per ton, which is definitely affecting producers in the downtown area of Tamaulipas.

Ricardo Sepulveda Cantu, President of the Citrus Growers of the Social Sector, said that they had discovered that there was no movement of the early cycle crops, so much so that their sales have not been entirely satisfactory.

"We're not selling on a large scale," he said, and there's been no variation in the prices of the early orange crop, to the extent that they are still being sold at 700 pesos per ton, which is very low.

The state official said that the central area of Tamaulipas produces around 10 tonnes of oranges per hectare and, despite the critical moments through which they are passing, they will have to find ways of improving the production of this fruit as well as finding other venues to market their product.

The State's citrus region has 40,000 hectares in production, all of which are located in Ciudad Victoria, Llera, Guemes Padilla and Hidalgo. Under normal conditions production cycles can amount to over 500,000 tonnes per year.
