AU: Threatened Simplot closure confronts candidates

Although Tasmania's vegetable processing industry is in decline, it's an issue that's fast gathering pace in the election.

Vegetable processor Simplot Australia announced in June that two of its vegetable processing facilities are facing imminent closure.

Managing director Terry O'Brien said at the time of the announcement the Bathurst and Devonport operations simply weren't generating enough profit.

The Devonport plant snap-freezes fresh vegetables, employs 300 staff and sustains most of Tasmania's processing vegetable growers.

The Bathurst facility is the largest corn processor in Australia, but while Simplot will work to keep the operations open, the factory might close as early as 2014.
