The 2013 campaign for Artichokes from Tudela has been "extraordinary and the best in history," according to its Protected Geographical Indication (PGI), which has stressed that, "the artichoke volumes shipped have doubled, surpassing the 2,500,000 kilos, and that the certified fresh produce has multiplied by six."
In a statement, the PGI Artichokes from Tudela has highlighted that, "it has been a very long campaign, as there were hardly any frosts at the beginning of the year, making it possible for the fresh Spring season to start very early, while cold temperatures prolonged it until late May."
The weather, on this occasion, "has helped double the production and multiplied the volume of certified artichokes by six, from 153,574 kilos in 2012 to an amazing 924,051 this year."
"The fresh production has broken all records," say sources from the PGI, who also underlined the considerable increase in the production for canning, which invites optimism for a sector dominated by four traders and eight processing firms which have been working since 1988 with the Quality Designation 'Artichokes from Tudela'.
According to the Regulatory Council, "the application period is now open for new plantations interested in being part of the PGI for one of Navarra's flagship products: the white artichoke from Tudela."
