AU: Changes to mango branding

A new brand of mangoes has been started in Western Australia's Ord in the hope of giving growers more power in the market. Rather than growers marketing their fruit individually, they've decided to get together and market their fruit collectively under the banner Australian Outback Mangoes.

The brand was created by Ari Parker, from Parker Poynt Packhouse, in partnership with fruit and vegetable agent Mercer Mooney. Ms Parker says the brand will change the way the mangoes are marketed and sold.

"Instead of individual growers selling to individual agents, all sizes and all grades going to one place for each grower, we are trying to become more co-ordinated, I guess. Sending to one agent who has sent through a marketing plan that stipulates how well they can deal with that grade and size, as a complete grower group."

Ms Parker says the catalyst for starting the brand was a poor mango season last year.

General manager of Mercer Mooney, Paul Neale, says growers could see the old system needed work.

"If you look at the efficiencies within the industry, we think there is a better way to do business by bringing growers together with a common purpose rather than working individually."

"That's where Australian Outback Mangoes comes in. It's an opportunity to come together, consolidate volumes and market fruit together."
