Special Melon Event 2013 of HM CLAUSE in Murcia, Spain

HM-CLAUSE melon varieties in Murcia



From 1st to 5th July, the seed producer and marketer HM-CLAUSE, who is the leading player among the melon seed business, hold their Special Melon Event 2013, which took place in their station in PozoEstrecho(Murcia), one of the European reference areas of melon production. The event focused primarily on the current melon line-up for the export markets.

The HM-CLAUSE team, consisting of a large number of technicians and agronomists, product managers and specialists in melon cultivation, welcomed some producers and the main melon European traders and importers.

During this event, the LSL charentais range (KARMAN and others varieties), the LSL galias (LAMBADA, CAPOEIRA) and the BACIR (a melon for gourmet) garnered significant interest from the visitors.

When visiting the fields of some Murcian farmers, Fresh Plaza could take a tour to see some of the latest major varieties developed by HM-CLAUSE for Murcia region: LAMBADA (Galia) VALIENTE (Piel de Sapo), MASTIL (yellow canaria) and KARMAN (Charentais), all of them having a great market potential and long-term future.

New LAMBADA (LSL Galia), attractive and deliciously sweet.
This is its first commercial year after two years of testing in fields. Harvest begins between around 20th of June, until mid July, depending on the characteristics of the area where planted.



It stands out because of its yield potential and its good plant with resistance to diseases such as powdery mildew, one of the main problems in the fields of Murcia this year. Its shape is round and it has a very homogeneous and remarkable netting. Furthermore, "Its intense yellow colour shows the optimal time to harvest, and is very appealing for consumers," says José Luis Moreno, Promotion and Development Technician in CLAUSE Spain.

Its Brix level is high, around 16, and the variety delivers a great sweetness enjoyed by the consumers

"LAMBADA has the feature of setting the fruits gradually and very easily, allowing better management for farmers at the time of carrying out the harvest at their optimum time, "says José Luis.

MÁSTIL (Yellow melon), crispy and fresh
This variety already well-known in Almeria, has been introduced in Murcia this season for harvest from June 15th to early July. Its skin stands out for its bright yellow colour and its flesh, being crispy, white and having a very refreshing taste. "Its shape is ovoid and its calibre is about 6.7, weighing between 1.5 and 1.7 kg, which makes it perfect for export to the North European markets,” explains Noelia Valcárcel, Promotion and Development Technician in Clause Spain. "In addition, it has been proved its flesh firmness after storage."

The producer Jesús Martínez García was pleased by its performance, combining a good yield, the right size and a plant having a good resistance to powdery mildew.

KARMAN (LSL charentais), shelf life with unique flavour
This attractive melon is harvested in Spain between July and August. "It is characterised by its light green colour on the outside and its uniform netting that does not go on the sutures. Inside, the flesh has an intense orange colour with a simply unique flavour," says Noelia Valcárcel.



Its other main feature is its long shelf life. KARMAN keeps well also on the plant at maturity. Its weight is usually between 1 and 1.2 kg (12Q and 12L sizes in France).

KARMAN can be planted in different countries in this order at harvest time: Brazil, Senegal, Morocco, Spain and finally France.

VALIENTE (Piel de Sapo), the reference in Murcia main season
This variety holds the authentic flavour of traditional Piel de Sapo. Its size is perfect for the Spanish market, and the variety has maintained a good commercial sizes in this complicated year (adverse weather), "says producer Pepe, who claims which this year he is getting a yield of 40,000 kg per hectare, although in a better year may reach 45,000 kg. "This year I'm selling it for 0.75 cents a kg."



Its high level of Brix, attractive externals, excellent taste and its high performance have made the VALIENTE the reference and leading variety for the producers in Murcia main season.
