AU: Citrus grower urges more support from supermarkets

A North Burnett citrus farmer is calling for more support from the major supermarket chains to support local produce.

The Australian Competition and Consumer Commission last week fined Coles $60,000 for incorrectly using signage giving the impression imported navel oranges were locally grown.

The advertisements appeared in five stores between March and May this year, including in Queensland.

Blue Cow Citrus manager Christian Bryant does not expect consumers to pay any extra for produce.

"We are all in it together. Farmers don't expect consumers to pay any more for their product this year compared to last year because we felt some pain but some support from our major retailers goes a long way," he said.
