Exporters of fruit from countries like Argentina and South Africa are increasingly focusing on Asia and the Middle East. The payment terms, prices, competitiveness and range are gaining popularity over Europe. For the Argentine company SAFEX these are the main destinations.
"The emphasis is on grapes and citrus. Exports of Argentine pears and apples is concentrated at 5 or 6 large exporters. I have 5 or 6 producers of citrus and 2 or 3 of grapes. We believe quality is more important than the brand," explains Willem Van Oostrom of SAFEX.
Argentina has two main grape varieties: Superior Seedless and Red Globe. This year's harvest was lower because of the rain, but there are some good results. "I think Argentina will benefit from extending the harvest season for new varieties as the Thompson Seedless and other late varieties," says Van Oostrom.
To the company, a wide variety of markets is essential. A year ago Brazil closed its borders to Argentine grapes. This can happen with any product. Europe is supplied with citrus through Egypt, Morocco and Spain. The prices are not very high. The mandarins from these countries are more expensive and there are opportunities for Argentine exports. "South Africa is still the main supplier of citrus in Europe, but Argentina presents itself more and more, because of the price and quality," says Willem Van Oostrom.
