Damián Segal, founder of 770 Fruits

"Argentina: "The key in the fruit business is differentiation"

Founded in 2009, 770 Fruits is an Argentinian firm devoted to the export and selling of pears, apples, lemons and mandarins. It exports to various markets, especially Russia and Brazil and in small amounts to Italy, Spain, Portugal, Finland, Hong Kong and Arab Emirates.

The firm controls around 250-270 hectares for the production of lemons and 225 for pears and apples. All the plantations are certified by GlobalGAP.

Damián Segal, founder of 770 Fruits, explains that the firm's philosophy is based on the integration of producers and not of the production chain. "We believe that the key is differentiation and specialisation. If you are devoted to producing, packing and selling, it is very difficult to become a specialist in one given thing."

This is why the firm works exclusively with associated producers, for whom all business practices are fully transparent. "When the season is over, all costs and profits are shared," says Damián.

In apples, the company produces clones of Red Delicious (Top Red), Royal Gala, Granny Smith and Cripps Pink. In pears it grows Williams, Red Bartlett, Red Anjou, Abate Fetel and Packham mainly. According to Damián, "this year not many changes took place, although a lot of work has been done to expand the Anjou plantations and replace all the red apple varieties."

In terms of markets, 770 Fruits' strategy is to focus on improving the quality yield per hectare to attract clients from the most demanding destinations. "We do not seek to make great profits in the short term, but long term relationships. The company's continuous growth, based on the trust placed by our clients and producers, leads us to believe that we are on the right track," concludes Damián Segal.
