"Filip Devlieghere: "We go for top quality"

Raspberry grower Devlieghere offers baby kiwi's as well from this year

After the change from tomato cultivation the company DeVlieghere in Veldegom has specialized in the production of raspberries for the past five years. We will also offer baby kiwi's for the first time this year. Manager Filip Devlieghere mentions that tomatoes were no longer profitable in their area. "We then decided to change to the integrated cultivation of raspberries. In total the area is 6,000 m2, of which 5,500 m2 is under glass and the rest is grown outside under a waterproof deck.

Own sales and through BelOrta
Devlieghere partly sells through the auction and directly to shops and from the house. "We work together with BelOrta and our raspberries are sold via the auction house to supermarkets and wholesalers. We pack together with BelOrta also under label of the customer. The part we sell ourselves is marketed under our own brand Devlieghere. We focus on the best quality. Anything which does not satisfy the fresh market, is kept separately and made into processed products like jam, wine, sorbet and sauce. We insist on top quality and are therefore very strict with the sorters. Everybody has his own block and we can therefore immediately establish when something goes wrong."

Thanks to the glasshouse cultivation Raspberry Grower, Devlieghere can offer raspberries from May till the end of December. "Everybody who loves raspberries is welcome here - from private person to retailer. We have something new this year: the first production of baby kiwi's. We planted 6,000 m2 and half will be in production from the beginning of September. We are at the coast and as a result we will be a week later than the harvest in the interior. The season is expected to last about three weeks. It is difficult to estimate the volume for the first time, but it will be between 1,000 and 2,000 kg."

"At the moment the raspberry prices are very good. Last week there was a peak in the supply and the more we supplied the more expensive they became. There is also a good demand. Last season we could also speak of a good middle price. We have arranged with ourselves not to join when the price is too low, but only to sell at a price at which we earn something" Filip concludes.
