Guatemala: Plastic allows fruits to reach markets in good condition
Olefinas is a global pioneer in the development of agro-industrial plastic products, mainly engaged in the production of polyethylene films for the protection of fruits and vegetables. Its products are distributed in the United States, Canada, Latin America and the Caribbean.
Their largest market, with which the company started, are the products to protect bananas. "Among our product range, we handle the famous banana bags. We distribute them mainly in Latin America and the Caribbean, although we have also exported them on occasion to Spain to protect the Canarian banana," says Diego Ramirez, Olefinas' Marketing Manager. "We also have polyethylene films to prevent friction between the fruit during packing, which allows it to arrive in a better state to the American and European markets."
Olefinas has four offices. Its central or administrative headquarters in Tampa, United States; a production plant in Mexico, another production plant in Guatemala and a distribution and marketing office in Costa Rica.
Much of the GDP of many countries in Latin America and the Caribbean comes from agriculture. It has become an activity that has tended to adopt technology to comply with the requirements to export products; for example: bananas, coffee, cardamom, strawberries and even flowers. Olefin Plastics are intended primarily to improve the productions for such exports.
"Among our products there are plastics for greenhouses, tunnels, hydroponics, etc. We provide almost everything concerning plastic films destined for agriculture," says Diego Ramirez. "We sell a lot of plastic mulch (or mulching) for vegetables and plastic for greenhouses. We dominate almost 80% of the market for the prior and 70% for the latter."
In Central America, the firm is the sector's leader with 66% of the market share and a leading position in most products. "Our philosophy is to offer excellent quality products. That has allowed us to be at the forefront of plastics used in the agriculture sector, as consumers recognize our quality," says Ramirez. "There are companies that offer cheaper products, but the risk of using low quality products is that you might lose the harvest and possibly a business or an export."
Innovation is another essential factor for Olefinas. The company, via its research laboratory, has developed numerous products to offer new options to the market or to satisfy the costumers' new needs throughout the more than 50 years that it has been in the market. "Currently, Olefinas has launched banana bags that are impregnated with new insecticide molecules that protect the bananas from pests, but that are very friendly to the environment and to the workers in the industry."
Another key to success is a good relationship with customers. The company carries out tests demonstrating the effectiveness of their products, manage affordable prices with dealers and customers, and a very open complaint policy claims. Ramirez explains, "We provide our customers and distributors with all the possible tests so that they feel like a part of the Olefinas channel and see us as a firm that helps them to have solutions to optimize their crops."
