Spain: Port of Almeria accelerates commitment to exporting vegetables

The project, which will bring fruits and vegetables by sea to Britain, continues steadily. The connection between the ports of Almeria and Southampton that will lead the export flow of fruit and vegetables from Almerian companies could be a reality soon.

Named, "Southampton Fruit Handling", in which both ports have been working for more than half a year offers the possibility of connecting the two areas for sea transport of fruit and vegetables in refrigerated ships, in the best conditions to supply the British market.

This experience is evaluated by the Port Authority of Southampton: "The perishable terminal in Southampton has been transporting perishable goods from different parts of Southern Europe to the UK for years, an experience and accumulated knowledge that constitutes a guarantee of good service and quality."

In fact, they have decades of importing tomatoes and other vegetables from the Canary Islands through the Port of Southampton.

The Port Authority explained that the British interest in Almeria is based on the fact, that the province meets the basic criteria to become a hub of relevance for the maritime transport of fruits and vegetables - both in terms of dealing with Central European markets and in playing a role in the entry of products from the countries of North Africa.

The representatives of this project know that Almeria is the first province in exports of fruits and vegetables in Spain, reaching export figures of over 1,800 million Euro in 2012, and similarly. They see much potential for the development of the cruise tourism business.

In addition, there can be multiple commercial relations between the two areas using the sea link. The Port of Southampton is one of the largest in the United Kingdom. "The container terminal is Britain's second most important one," added the Port Authority.
