Jan Vermeiren, Exofi:

"Avocado volumes quadrupled because of production peak in Peru"

Exofi offers exotic fruit and vegetables and mushrooms from 50 countries all year round.

According to Jan Vermeiren it is noticeable that the Summer is on its way. "Of course there is now more demand for seasonal products, such as cherries, peaches and nectarines. We supply exotic products and notice that sales stagnate during the Summer months. Actually during the Summer, no product does exceptionally well. It is all a bit quieter and more gradual."

More volumes
According to him, the avocado is a product, which sells all year round. "At the moment we offer avocados from Peru. There is a larger supply from that country now because of the peak in production. This week (week 25) we expect quite a lot. The volumes might even be quadrupled. We come from a good avocado market. About four weeks ago we still spoke about prices of 8/9 Euro. Now, it's more like 6 Euro when selling. Because of the larger supply and the linear demand the price decreases. That decrease started last week and has continued this week."

Ready-to-eat
"We have the varieties Ettinger and Hass. We notice that in Belgium the variety Ettinger is more popular. People prefer to have green rather than black avocado. In countries like Spain and France this is quite different - there 90% of Hass is consumed. A growing segment in avocados and mangoes is 'ready-to-eat' and this is a segment I strongly believe in. The products arrive here and are made ready to eat in ripening cells. After that, they also receive a special 'ready-to-eat' packing."

"Another product which is now available in large quantities is the limes from Morocco. A few weeks ago the price was 12 Euro/case. Because of the large supply prices are now round 7 Euro/case. Strong products with weekly fixed sales also in the Summer months at Exofi are: mango, papaya formosa, harricots verts from Kenya, mangetout, green asparagus from Peru, Thai asparagus tops, sweet potatoes from Peru, Ghana pineapple, avocado, litchi (now from Mexico and Thailand), mini-vegetables, carambola, limes bananito's, etc."
