TopFruit celebrating history introducing new varieties in South Africa

Celebrating three decades in the nursery business, TopFruit in South Africa has made an impressive mark in its fruit industry through the introduction of new fruit varieties from breeders all over the world.

With its business born in 1983, the TopFruit focus is to discover and unlock the potential of these varieties for Southern African producers.

According to Rob Meihuizen, managing director of TopFruit, this is achieved through variety development, a strong program of intellectual property management, brand development and innovative marketing initiatives.

“Since its inception, TopFruit has acquired rights to and managed, a number of varieties on behalf of the owners, Meihuizen says. “The management of the Cripps Pink apple variety, more commonly known by the trademark Pink Lady®, proved to be a turning point in the company’s history.”

Meihuizen also points out that over the years the potential of trademarking fresh produce has become more important and has introduced new possibilities into the industry.

“The extensive experience in managing Pink Lady® has resulted in TopFruit no longer just operating in the field of plant improvement through the introduction of new varieties,” Meihuizen says. “TopFruit now offers expertise in the wider arena of variety management which includes management surrounding a single variety, or range of varieties.”

TopFruit was found by three nurserymen, Dr. Jim Button, Richard Hill and Rob Jeffery. It works in close co-operation with its affiliated nurseries which supply its varieties. They are: Cederberg Tree Nursery, Rosenhof Nursery, Witzenberg Range Nurseries and Lelienfontein Nursery.

TopFruit is a member of the Associated International Group of Nurseries (AIGN®). AIGN is marking its 25th year in Seattle and Yakima, Washington from June 15th to 21st.
