Mogalla begins harvest campaign

Product diversification, key for a constant presence in the market

The Spanish firm Mogalla, better known for producing and selling quality citrus in Andalusia, has begun its 2013 garlic campaign, which the firm will export to several European countries.

A few years ago, Mogalla focused exclusively on the citrus sector, a sector they already know well, until they decided to expand and diversify their production, meeting the demands of the same markets where its citrus are exported, and in other occasions, the demands of specific markets. "This way, nowadays we produce and sell garlics, citrus, apricots, flat peaches, kakis, pomegranates, peppers, aubergines, courgettes and broccolis, besides operating in the seeds, corn and beef sectors," explains Jesús Limón, Manager of Mogalla.

This is the company's third garlic season. Mogalla has 85 hectares devoted to the production of the Spring violet, Spring white and White American varieties, considered the most profitable. "We conducted tests last year in five hectares planted with the famous Purple garlic from Las Pedroñeras, but the results were not satisfactory in terms of performance in kilos and prices obtained. From an agricultural and commercial point of view, we discard this variety," he says.

The firm has high hopes for the garlic campaign this year, as they expect a good quality product, despite the fact that this year's adverse weather conditions will cause a slight decrease in production volumes.

In addition to producing its own garlic, the firm, based in the town of Cartaya, in the Spanish province of Huelva, has the necessary infrastructure to control the entire selling process, from the preservation chambers to the packaging lines, where garlics are sorted loose, in nets or bags.

Under the MOGALLA brand, these Spanish garlics can be found in Portugal, especially the violet variety, as well as in the Netherlands and the Czech Republic, where they prefer white garlic. "We are seeking to expand our business in new markets," concludes Jesús Limón.
