CMA CGM raises rates despite capacity glut

Container shipping group CMA CGM is raising prices on Asia routes despite a global glut in capacity and plans by the line to increase the size of its fleet.

The family-owned company on July 1 will raise fees to $1,375 a container from $600 on cargo shipped to Northern Europe from Asia. On the Mediterranean-Asia route, the rate will rise this month to $1,200 from $900.

The moves follow the lead of other major shipping companies, including Denmark-based A.P. Moller-Maersk A/S, whose Maersk Line unit is the world's biggest container shipping company by volume.
