Osman Aritan:

"Turkish cherries are unbeatable in quality and value for money”"

The preparation for the Turkish cherry season are in full swing at the Dutch-Turkish trading house Purnatur in Ridderkerk. "At this point we expect to be marketing around 2000 tons of Turkish cherries during the coming season” according to the company’s CEO Osman Aritan.

"Obviously the initial volumes from the first production areas will be somewhat limited, but from the area’s which will follow thereafter the outlook is great. History has taught us that making an accurate prediction is rather difficult. The climate can always play a wild card and have a disastrous affect on the harvest in a specific area. For the time being however, we are extremely positive that we will have a great season”.

The collaboration between Osman Aritan of Purnatur and Ali Sari of the Turkish agricultural enterprise Sarilar stretches over a long time. It is therefore no surprise that Purnatur is the European exclusive distributor of Sarilar’s fresh produce. For many years Sarilar has been a leading enterprise in Turkey, specifically in terms of producing fresh cherries. Other strong products which are grown and marketed by Sarilar are apricots, Santa Maria pears, peaches, figs, quinces and pomegranates. Although the company has experienced solid growth, Ali Sari still maintains a personal grip on all production, packing and export activities of his company. Purnatur on the other hand is tasked with marketing these products via the shortest possible supply chain to clients all over Europe.
Good news for the 2013 season is also that Sarilar will be packing a part of its cherry harvest in punnets, as it has been proven that this is the most effective way of selling such a sensitive product in the retail outlets. The excellent shelf life of Sarilar’s Napoleon cherries is a further competitive edge in this market segment. Another interesting development in recent years has been the enthusiasm with which wholesalers view the larger sized cherries, and the bulk of Sarilar’s volume of big cherries is now sold in the traditional specialist shops.
“We are fully confident that our strategic plan for the 2013 cherry season will have solid spinoffs for our clients. Because of the direct lines which we have set up between our production in Turkey and our clients elsewhere in Europe we are able to meet our clients’ needs with the minimum of hassle," says Osman Aritan.
