"Marcel van Eeuwijk: "Next week more supply"

Europe: First Turkish cherries arrived

Aqui Fruit & Greens received the first Turkish cherries to-day. "This week the total supply of cherries from Turkey, Spain and Italy is starting slowly" Marcel van Eeuwijk says. Sales of the cherries are dong well. There are also not too many of them. The Burlatras has just about disappeared from the market."

Prices of the cherries are very varied at the moment from 3 to 7 Euro depending on size and quality. "There is not much on offer in the 30+ assortment. Therefore the large sizes are a lot more expensive" the importer mentions. "Next week the supply of cherries will really break out and it is hoped that the weather will be warmer resulting in supply and demand being more or less equal."

Melons
At the start of the Spanish melon season prices were high because of a small supply, but in the meantime supply has increased and prices decreased again from last week. Watermelons were sold for 50/60 cents and Galia-melons for 2-4 Euro. The supply to supermarkets has all been planned with the result that surpluses end up on the free market."
