The variety developed by Levy is able to adapt to extreme conditions, it is ideal for arid climates so characteristic of the Eastern shores of the Mediterranean. Also, to everyone's surprise, the new potato is irrigated with seawater, i.e. salt water.
It is certainly something that can radically change the socio-economic map of the entire region and other areas with similar climatic conditions. According to a press release issued by Europa Press, scientists are already meetings in Jordan, Egypt, Lebanon, Israel and Morocco to share knowledge and build bridges in information and technology; information that comes from the Federation of Jewish Communities of Spain.
The possibilities created by such a variety are enormous. After more than twenty years of work, David Levy can get farmers in these areas, that don't have a very favourable climate, not only to cultivate their own crops of potato but to have access to the possibility of marketing.
It's something that would benefit hundreds of thousands of farmers around the world and millions of consumers. As Levy himself says in the report, hopefully this new development will help to build bridges of peace and understanding in a region as troubled as the Middle East. It is a story we will keep an eye on and that could be a milestone in the history of agriculture. Congratulations and thank you, Professor Levy.
