Piet Blankendaal:

"With Alpha's the potato season really starts at Malta"

Due of the cold weather sales of new potatoes from Malta were somewhat careful, but according to Piet Blankendaal of Blankendaal Trade, The Netherlands, the lights are green for the coming weeks. "With sunny weather the housewives will again think of new potatoes. What a nice coincidence, because this week we start with the first Alpha's, which for me are actually the only potatoes from Malta."

"In the last few weeks we received the spring varieties, but I am not particularly fond of these myself. The real authentic Malta taste one only finds in the Alpha's" Blankendaal continues. "And the season goes on quickly again. The harvest season will last another week or two and then supply is over again."

Piet estimates the volume of import potatoes from Malta is now at a comparable level with last season. Blankendaal Trade when selling, works together with Olympic Fruit from Barendrecht, The Netherlands. "We only concentrate on the Dutch market when selling. Only a surplus will be exported to Germany. I have full confidence in a good continuation of the season. The good prices for the Dutch harvest are always good for the sales, because then the difference in price is of course smaller."
