Chilean grapes now entering UK through Portsmouth

Recently the port of Portsmouth in the UK has been handling Chilean grapes for the first time. The grapes are being distributed by MMD Shipping Services from Portsmouth. David Loader, of MMD said, "We got a contract with NYK Cool, who bring the grapes in, to distribute them on their behalf.

"The season has just started and we have done 3 vessels so far. We're also handling NYK bananas. Once the fruit arrives it is being distributed throughout the country to major retailers."

David pointed out that the fruit previously used to enter the UK via Sheerness, but that the port had been going through a number of changes, which had caused the fresh produce industry to seek alternative ports.

Vice President of NYK Cool, John Rowland, explained, "Sheerness decided to concentrate on a project whereby port would be used for windmill production and shipping which would limit their ability to handle reefer cargoes. NYKCool were forced to find an alternative for its weekly banana service from Central America and other seasonal services like Chile..."
