Along with the seasonal opening of AspergeGilde Peel & Maas

Netherlands: Photo report Open Day Teboza

Teboza in Helden held its annual open day on Saturday, the 30th of March. The company Will Teeuwen held its annual open day for the AspergeGilde Peel & Maas on the following day. During the open day, visitors could get a good glimpse of the asparagus harvest, the sorting process, peeling, packaging and they could also buy and enjoy the asparagus in the field kitchen located on the asparagus field.

The emphasis during the open day was on the new asparagus grasses; Fortems, Tallems and Primems. Various subcontractors were present during the open day to promote their products and services. "There were primarily people from the entire asparagus chain present on Saturday: from growers to suppliers, wholesalers and retailers. It was not very busy due to the cold weather, but it was packed during the opening of the season by AspergeGilde Peel & Maas on Sunday," Will Teeuwen recalls. There were also local celebrities present during the opening of the asparagus guild such as the mayor, representative Patrick van der Broeck and former football trainer Sep Vergoossen. Bert Schöttelndreier, fruit and vegetable buyer from Makro Cash and Carry NL was named ambassador of the asparagus guild.

Will feels that the public's enthusiasm for asparagus has been on the rise. "A lot of consumers enjoy having a look at the asparagus crop in the kitchen. We would really like to make the seasonal opening of AspergeGilde Peel & Maas a local event, like they do in Germany. We are thinking about repeating this event again later in the season." The asparagus grower speaks about the unusual start of the season. "Production is around two to three weeks behind due to the cold weather. That is something I have never experienced before. However, I am not too worried about it because the consumer will still want to eat asparagus and our customers want to expand their asparagus segments annually. I am expecting the season to develop well into June. The only thing that could cause problems is if the temperature quickly rises to above 25 degrees which could mean that people no longer think about eating asparagus. As long as that doesn't happen, I am not at all concerned.
