Willem Fiering, Anaco Greeve:

"EU: "More and more chaotic Israeli pepper export"

Good prices are still being made for Israeli peppers, says Willem Fiering, who has been importing peppers from Adafresh for years. "Two weeks ago, the prices were high. The prices then went down a little and now have gone back up a bit. The price of red peppers from Israel is between 9.50 and 10 Euro. The yellow peppers are sold for between 11 and 13 Euro, depending on the quality, as there are a lot of yellow peppers that are more green than yellow. The price level of the orange peppers is between 9 and 11 Euro."

There hasn't been large volumes arriving from Israel this year, says the importer. "Before, there were three big exporters in Israel, and they were real specialists. Nowadays everyone is sending peppers from Israel and it has caused a bit of chaos in the trade. Especially after the fall of Agrexco, there was a huge splintering in the trade. You can already see that a lot of Israel exporters are starting a sales office in Holland, and expect this development in continue over the next few years."

"Many small growers have stopped, but they are swallowed up by the bigger companies. So as far as export volumes are concerned, it doesn't matter that much. A lot is also being sent to Russia, so less is coming to the European market. This year the competition from Spanish peppers was very big, because Spain sent good quality peppers. I myself am sold out, and switching to Dutch produce."
