"Europe: "Citrus practically the only fruit going well at the moment"

Winter is lingering for longer than most people in the fruit and vegetable trade would like. This was said by Francis van Overstraeten, salesman at De Roeck. "There was little to do at the import market in Brussels this week. Everything seemed to have halted. What a contrast to last week, when the sun was out. This wintery weather is a catastrophe for most of the fruit and vegetables trade. Good volumes came from Spain, but at the moment they can't be sold. Whether you're asking 50 cents or a Euro, there is no interest. Hopefully this will change when the spring comes back."

"What stands out is that citrus is still doing well," continues the trader. "We can't complain about it, it's practically the only fruit coming out on top. There is good quality and the sales are going quite well. The prices are also good. You pay around 70 to 80 cents per kilo for a good hand orange, and for juice oranges it's around 60/70 cents. Around 50 to 18 Euro is paid for 10 kilos of mandarins, which is also a good price."
