Marcel van der Lem:

"Netherlands: "2013 started well for bananas"

Wholesaler van der Lem from Uitgeest is one of the few trading companies in the Netherlands with its own banana ripening facility. Although the wholesaler himself carries Turbana bananas, the company mainly ripens bananas for other retailers and fellow traders. Marcel van der Lem says that the year 2013 has started well for bananas. "There was high demand, especially in the beginning of the year. That was a bit of luck. Traditionally, banana sales are much higher in winter than in summer. I find it hard to say how the market will develop over the coming weeks."

All pallets at Van der Lem are identified through a computer system. This enables tracking and tracing of each pallet from plantation to the store. "We are one of the major players in the Netherlands where organic bananas are concerned. That share increases slightly by the year," says Marcel. "The areas of origin for bananas have been the same for years, although Peru is on the rise."
