The weather has been decisive for the 2012/13 production in Southern Italy. Leonardo Cimino, from the F.lli Cimino company, explains that "temperatures were pretty high during May-June 2012 therefore, in addition to the normal fruit fall (unripe fruit that falls from trees), fruit slightly bigger than a chickpea has also been falling. In the end, superior quality and bigger fruits have developed. Also, It has been warm in September, October and November as well, with few temperature changes between night and day and low rainfall, so there has been a 10-day delay in harvesting."
The company cultivates 12 acres of common clemetines, 2.5 acres of Caffin and 37 acres of Hernandina. The trees are planted in a 4x4 or 5x5 layout, the land tends to be sandy and loamy with plants that are 40 to 50 years old and produce around 500 quintals per 2.5 acres.
"We also have common clementine 35-year-old trees planted in a 4.5x4.5 layout, which are harvested just before Christmas. Caffins are not in production yet, as the plants, created from Caffin and Clemenrubi grafts, are 3 years old."
The Hernandina variety is planted in a 4.5x4.5 layout and so far production hasn't been bad. Harvesting took place in January.
Commercially, the product did well, as demand was higher than supply. "Prices are higher than last year."
"Our clementines are not affected by competition from abroad. In addition, cultivar Hernandina, which now has expanded its cultivated land, and cultivar Caffin have much higher prices."
The main buyers are represented by Italian supermarkets. "We supply them with approximately 2,000 quintals of clementines and 2,000 quintals of Hernandina."
The produce is packed in nets and small crates and transportation is carried out by Tirs.
