Canadian authorities investigate Brazilian orange juice export to US

Canadian authorities have agreed to investigate claims that Brazilian orange juice is being taken into the US illegally, via Canada, in attempts to avoid duty.

Florida's Senator Bill Nelson called on the Canadian Ambassador to the US to investigate the claims.

No duty is applied to produce entering the US via Canada under the North American Free trade Agreement, but there have been claims since last year, that Brazilian exporters were exploiting the situation.

CEO of CitrusBR, the Brazilian trade group, Christian Lohbauer, has denied such claims, saying "Brazilian orange juice exporters do not use its exportation to Canada to avoid paying US federal tariffs."

He went on to say that some Canadian companies did export Brazilian orange juice to the US, but only as a final, packaged product, outside the control of Brazilian exporters.
