Italy: ISAAQ®, a refreshing snack apple

Much has been said about it, but, at this stage, not many people have actually seen - never mind tasted - the new Isaaq apple.

The apple has been bred as part of a collaborative effort with Centro Innovazione Varietale (CIA, Variety Innovation Centre) and Kiku,

The name of the apple has been chosen in honour of great scientist Isaac Newton who, according to the legend, formulated his Law of Universal Gravitation following the fall of an apple from a tree.

ISAAQ® is striking for its small size and bright colour: it almost looks like a toy apple or a scale model, but it is in fact a compact and crunchy fruit, slightly sour and very refreshing.

It's heritage included gala apple varieties and its harvesting time is similar, though delayed by 14 days on average. The brix level of the variety, on average, is around 13.

Thomas Braun (KIKU) and Marzio Zaccarini (CIV) have presented ISAAQ® at Fruit Logistica 2013, a compact small apple, recently launched under the "natural snack" brand.

The enthusiasm in KIKU's stand in Berlin was palpable. Thomas Braun reports that, "As of next year, we will start with the first experimental plantings. We think that this product is ideal for a certain kind of target- not only kids and young people, but also adults who want to carry around a natural, healthy, fresh and portable snack."

Thomas Braun shows how compact ISAAQ® is, an ideal apple for small portions.

In turn, Alessio Martinelli, CIV's Technical Director (see photo below), expresses his satisfaction for the collaboration with KIKU: "It is a successful partnership, as we are combining the best parts of our two structures. We specialize in the development of fruit that can contribute to the segmentation of supplies, while KIKU joins in with its great commercial and communicative capability. Working on such complex projects requires efficient synergies. And this is exactly the case!"

There has been great interest in the apple, in particular from the UK and New Zealand. Cultivation is going to commence in Austria, Italy and Germany.

The intention is to cultivate apples which will be sold directly from the orchard to retail.
