Brazil: A drop in exports affects orange producers

Orange producers of São Paulo (Brazil) are quite discouraged. Many have chosen to replace their citrus orchards with sugar cane plantations.

Currently a machine uproots four orange trees per minute on a 150 acres farm in Pirassununga, central region of the state of São Paulo.

A farm that was once produced 150 thousand 40 kilos boxes per harvest. One producer said that losses due to pests and crop diseases discouraged them from undertaking the activity.

The price being paid by the industry is yet another reason why the producer is waiving the crop. "Today we are paid $6 (Brazilian Reals) per box, and at that price it's just not worth it," he explains.

In recent years, there was a decline in orange juice consumption throughout developed countries and the international market price fell.
