Sister companies and strategic partnerships link the value chain for Sustainability and Profitability in Agriculture

South Africa: Farm Secure's fresh approach to farming

A chain is no stronger than its weakest link. To get the best results, each link needs to be hand-picked and of high quality. The Farmsecure group of companies and its strategic partners integrate the farming process in such a way. Through key collaborations and sister companies, Farmsecure is able to build a solid foundation that spans across the entire agricultural value chain.

This enables the company to holistically approach any given season with all the tools in-hand, which leads to optimized yield, mitigated risk and maximized profit.

On its own fruit farming operations across South Africa – which covers more than 2 500 ha – Farmsecure produces a range of citrus, pome fruit and stone fruit varieties year-round. The company also has interests in livestock and grains.

Before, during and after each season, Farmsecure companies and partners work together to ensure the sustainability and profitability of its own farming operations, as well as that of its clients’. Some of the key services include:

• Scientific farming
Farmsecure’s agricultural sciences entity employs more than 140 agronomists, horticulturalists, soil scientists and experts on a variety of crops. Their specialised knowledge and experience supports the farmer from soil to shelf. Their irrigation arm offers a holistic irrigation solution to optimize water usage.

• Packaging
Prisma Packaging supplies fruit growers with the complete basket of competitively priced packaging materials. The company prides itself on being the source of packaging innovation for all fruit growers and exporters.

• Export and quality assurance
As strategic partners to the Farmsecure Group, Colors Fruit and SITCO Leading Inspections are valuable contributors to the success of the value chain. Colors Fruit is one of the largest fruit exporters in South Africa; SITCO Leading Inspections is a global, independent, third-party inspection and verification business specialising in fruit and other agri commodities.

• Research
ExperiCo offers pre- and post-harvest research and services to enhance yield and quality, including cultivar evaluation and research and development for fruit, vegetables and crops.

In addition to these, companies within the Farmsecure Group lead the field in plant nutrition (Kynoch Fertilizers) and crop protection (TechniChem, Terason).

With this level of expertise and holistic, specialised services at its disposal, the Farmsecure group of companies is set for continued success in 2013 on its own farming operations, and that of its clients.
