Mexico: Heavy rain damages crops

Last week’s heavy rains caused considerable damage in the region of Mexico’s Sur de Sonora, says chairman of the Asociación de Productores de Hortalizas de Invernaderos, Manuel Antonio Cazares Castro. The Sonora representative stated that the rains will cause at least a day’s delay, although the coming weather still might have some tricks up its sleeve.

Persistent rain slows down both planting and harvesting. “We expect the rain to be a special nuisance in the harvest of cherry tomatoes and aubergine,” says Cazares Castro.

The 2012/13 season has a planting area of 500 hectares at its disposal, 80% of which is already cultivated.
