Emiel de Vocht, Tuinbouwbedrijf de Vocht:

"Good corn salad market because of disappointing harvest Italy"

Since the middle of October there has been a positive mood on the corn salad market. This as told by Emiel de Vocht of Tuinbouwbedrijf de Vocht from St-Katelijne- Waver. "It is running very well, demand is first class and prices are good also. The only disadvantage at the moment is that the yield per hectare is a little disappointing, but this is because of the sombre weather. The better prices make up for this disadvantage." According to the grower the good demand is mainly the result of the bad harvest in Italy. "The rain and frost there were the cause of less production and I heard that the quality is also not very good. These weather conditions have caused all lettuce products to do well."

"The corn salad prices are between 4 and 5 Euro and I expect prices to remain like this for a while. The harvest will continue, although somewhat slower and I think the market situation will remain stable. Unless there is a massive production following a lot of days with sun, but it does not look like that for the time being. Expectations towards Christmas are good up to now. Last year it was really terrible. Then prices were about one Euro." Tuinbouwbedrijf de Vocht cultivate all year round and supply the corn salad to Mechelse Veilingen.
