Spain: High prices for Murcia's lettuce
As usual at this time of the year, central and northern European lettuce production has pretty much disappeared, offering Spain a gap to fill, especially to Murcia, as they are able to produce it all year round.
"We have already been exporting to England, France and Germany for three weeks because they now have lower temperatures and they cannot produce," explains Domingo Llamas, president of Hoyamar, S Coop.
"Bad weather is not letting us work this week, because lettuce cannot be harvested while it rains, as it easily gets muddy," explains Domingo.
In terms of prices, it appears that they are very high by the time they reach consumers, surpassing 13 Euro per tray.
Murcia already suffered floods in September, with partial losses of production, although Domingo is optimistic.
"I believe this campaign will be similar to last year's, or even better. In 3 weeks we will make up for the losses caused by floods. Crops have been reduced because many are scared to plant. Additionally, European supermarkets are very demanding with us in terms of prices, and with these losses, we expect prices to stabilise to help us improve the situation. We cannot risk losing more money."
The firm produces and exports lettuce of the Iceberg, Romaine and Baby varieties, packed in plastic bags with the brand HOYAMAR.
The entire production has certifications from GLOBAL G.A.P., BRC, IFS, QS, ISO 9001, ISO14001, Social Pact for the Environment in the Region of Murcia and LessCO2.

Hoyamar had a stand at Fruit Attraction 2012, which was a very positive experience. "Lots of people came to the fair and we received many visitors. We are fully satisfied," concludes Domingo Llamas.
