Spanish peppers waiting for Dutch campaign to end
The season for Spanish pepper exporters will start in early November, when the Dutch supply of vegetables starts coming to an end. "We focus more on Germany, Eastern Europe and the UK, as they offer good prices," explains Francisco J. Cazorla, commercial director of London Growers.
Spanish peppers compete mainly with Israel, as well as Morocco. "Israel competes in equal terms, meeting the same standards of quality and residue control; however, Morocco offers much lower prices without meeting those same standards," affirms Francisco J.
Just three years ago, pepper producers from Almeria had trouble with residue control, although the situation has now radically changed. "The good thing about Almeria is our ability to rise every time we fall. We now use 99.9% effective integrated control treatments, which is working really well," says Francisco J.
Besides tomatoes and cucumbers, London Growers also sells peppers, 80% of which are red, and also green, of the Alonso, Melchor, Olvera and Mustang varieties. Yellow peppers are of the Orquesta and Delux varieties. The firm owns its own packing plant and uses all sorts of Natural Direct brand packaging.
