More tomatoes, aubergines and courgettes

Spain: Almeria optimistic about new season

Because of the good harvest results in season 2011/2012 and because of the low production costs of courgettes also in the 2012/2013 season more tomatoes, aubergines and courgettes will be harvested in Almeria, as announced by the German website Fruchthandel.de.

During the last week of August the planting process of peppers came to an end. There are hardly any changes in the area of production. The cuttings of the aubergines sowed during August are now going into the greenhouses. And despite the bad experiences during the EHEC-crisis there are still many cucumber growers. The tendency is for middle-late and late varieties, which will be harvested from October till the beginning of March.

In addition to peppers, tomatoes are still the most important product in the greenhouses of Almeria. As the very early tomatoes last season pushed the prices down, the planting process has been delayed somewhat. The idea is to equal the good harvests of last year again this year between December and March. Last year Almeria's product dominated the markets.
