UK bracing itself for Carrot Whistle Olympics
A few holes along the vegetable is all it takes to turn to carrot into a whistle and Clem, with the Great British Carrot Group, has launched a competition to find the best whistlers in the East Cambridgeshire area.
Clem has been growing carrots at Willow Farm, Soham, since the early 1960s and is a former chairman of the British Carrot Growers Association. He became an MBE (Member of the British Empire) in 2006 for his work in promoting the produce.
He said: "The Great British Carrot Whistle Olympics is aimed at engaging with consumers in a fun way, while also highlighting all that is great about British carrots – available for nearly 12 months of the year, one of the healthiest vegetables you can eat and endlessly versatile, from soups, sides, salads, casseroles and cakes.
"Research shows that many consumers are turned off by worthy healthy eating messages. Hopefully this will engage with consumers in a light hearted way as well as getting across some great recipes and key health messages.
"We’ll also be tapping into the huge audience that is interested in carrot whistles – just Google the words and a staggering 64 million results come up!"
The competition's top prize is a limited edition set of two London 2012 gold coins made of 22 carat (carrot?) gold and worth a whopping £1,200.
All you have to do to enter is video yourself playing a gold-themed song on your carrot whistle and post it on www.facebook.com/greatbritishcarrots.
