French supermarkets losing money on fruit and vegetables

The prices in the super- and hypermarkets of Auchan, Carrefour, Casino, Cora and Système U have a margin of on average 1.4%. This means that the supermarkets earn €2.10 from €150 worth of products. This was shown from figures from l'Obervatoire, which have been released. In the autumn the complete report will appear with the prices and margin of six departments of the French supermarket chains.

Some departments are losses, such as the butchers (-4.4%), the frozen meat (-4.8%) and fruit and vegetables (-0.7%). To cover the costs of maintenance and customer services, the prices of the departments dairy products and eggs (2.9%), poultry (4.9%) and meat (6.1%) have positive margins.

The supermarkets want to indicate with total transparency, that the allegations about their margins are often wrong. But they also admit that their economic balance is often weak.
