"Guy de Meyer, Demargro: "Good demand for summer vegetables"
"Prices for leeks markedly high"
Because of the better weather the demand for summer vegetables is good. "We certainly have no reason to complain., there is a relatively high demand and prices are good in general as well" the exporter mentions. "Especially those of peppers and tomatoes. To-day the red peppers were about 2,20 for the 85ths. Also the yellow ones are relatively expensive. The green went for 1,40. Also the tomatoes are a little more expensive to-day" the trader mentions. "They were about 1,05 and that is relatively high for the time of the year."
There still is a demand for leeks in this weather or are summer vegetables only eaten now? "There is definitely demand for leeks" Guy tells. "Prices as well are at a good level. There is still a small part of the old harvest and a shortage of new at the moment. Because not too much is available prices increase. For Flandria to-day 1,30/kg was paid. For the lesser quality, category ! the price was 1,10/kg. The leeks are supplied to various European customers. "A little bit goes everywhere" as per Guy.
It is striking that prices are still so good" the entrepreneur mentions. "The quality is not the very best as yet, because of the frost earlier this year. Every body expected this to be a disadvantage to prices and that a cheap late season would follow, but this does not appear to be happening. The leeks grew well, but now the quality is decreasing more and more. Now we wait for the young leeks. "Partly they are coming from glasshouses, but in about 2/3 weeks there will be more young leeks on the market. For now we will have to sell old leeks for a while."
