Japan: Aeon opening earlier

Aeon will be opening its more than 1,400 Japanese supermarkets two hours earlier than usual this summer - at 7am. This is to cater for consumers who change their daily routine as the nation moves into a power-saving mode, according to sources.

The nation's biggest retailer is counting on people who may want to shop in cooler hours in the morning or before going to work when some businesses are expected to move up their starting hours to save electricity.

The change will be implemented from June 1st and will remain in place until September.
No changes are planned for the closing hours. The group, however, will keep electricity consumption at last year's level or even lower by increasing the use of power-saving lighting, for instance.
