Frank Jansen:

EU: Good demand for leeks from Eastern Block and UK

The trade in leeks is at the moment just about at the end of the Dutch season. "From week 20/21 the first Spanish leeks are expected. The volumes of Dutch cold store leeks will therefore slowly decrease," Frank Jansen of cultivation and packing company Jansen from Etten-Leur, The Netherlands says. The leeks, as is known, have had problems with the frost in the beginning of the year and as a result the quality is generally not too good."

According to Frank prices are good at the moment, also because of the small volumes brought to auction. "Prices are reasonable. I expect the prices to increase somewhat in the coming weeks, because of the limited supply. The cold weather is favourable for the demand of leeks. At the moment there is a good demand from the Eastern Block and the United Kingdom."

Jansen do not import leeks themselves, but try to hold on to the Dutch season till the middle of June when the first new leeks are harvested again. Cultivation and packing company Gebrs. Jansen supply consumers locally and abroad of leeks in net bags, boxes, wooden crates and flowpack.
