Mozambique: Port of Maputo anticipates 14 million tons in 2012
The cargo handled at the port of Maputo in Mozambique may total 14 million tons this year according to projections from the Maputo Port Development Company (MPDC), the port’s manager.
Osório Lucas, the interim chief executive of MPDC said that in the last eight years the port had seen the cargo it handles triple, from 4 million tons in 2003 to 11.8 million tons in 2011.
Lucas said the expansion plan outline the port's cargo reaching 40 million tons within the next six years.
This projection is based on an expected increase in bulk and general cargo from 2 million tons at the moment to 8 million tons per year as well as a rise in the amounts exported via the Coal Terminal, from 6 million tons now to 30 million tons per year, 20 million tons of which will be coal and 10 million tons will be magnetite.
The port of Maputo includes the Citrus Fruit terminal operated by FTP – Fresh Produce Terminals managed by state company Portos e Caminhos de Ferro de Moçambique.
