US (CA): Tulare County crop report

Deciduous Tree Fruits, Nuts and Grapes:

Some grape vineyards are still being pruned and old orchards are being removed for replanting.
Orchards are continuing to have herbicides applied.
Pistachios are being exported to the United Kingdom, China, Belgium, Italy, France, Portugal, and Germany. Almond trees are in the middle of their bloom, and expected warmer weather later in the week will allow bees to continue with pollination. Almonds are being exported to Japan, the European Union, Russia and India. Irregular spring weather patterns are worrying tree fruit and nut growers because cooler weather may cause problems with petal drop. Also, some irrigation has started in nut and tree fruit orchards because of the lack of rain.

Citrus, Avocados and Olives:

Citrus continues to be picked, packed and exported. Navel oranges are being exported to Korea, Chile, New Zealand, Middle East, Philippines, Hong Kong, Japan, Peru, Australia and China. Some packing houses have reported that Valencia orange maturity is nearing harvest levels. Navels continue to be checked for freeze damage. Lemons continue to be exported to El Salvador, Columbia, Australia, New Zealand, Bahamas and Indonesia. Mineola tangelos are being exported to the Netherlands, Russia and Chile.

Vegetables, Melons and Berries:

Ground preparation and planting has started in vegetable fields. Certified producers are starting early summer vegetables in green houses and cold frames. Strawberry growers are preparing their fields for spring production.

Additional Comments:

Citrus nurseries are currently selling and shipping budwood to various customers both domestic and export. Local wholesale nurseries continue to restock growing grounds for the spring shipping season.
