Chile: Info from fresh and frozen berries market for 2011/12

Situation for bilberry, raspberry, strawberry and blackberry in the US, Europe and Asia markets


USA
Bilberry: Active sales observed in the fresh market during te first 15 days of December. The offer comes mainly from Chile and Argentina. During week 51, the activity level tended to diminish generating price adjustments on imports around 1 to 3 US dollars per box, reaching then 13 to 16 US dollars per 6oz, depending on the origin and size.

for the rest, the market in general also developed slowly due to end of the year vacations, predicting a change in the tendency starting the first week of 2012.

Blackberry: the offer comes from Mexico and US. The first offer coming this week reached FOT prices between 6,0 and 17,0 US dollars per 8*12oz and the second offer from 9 to 12 US dollars per 12*6oz. Sales were slow and the market is considered fragile.

Raspberry: Offer comes from Mexico and importing prices are between 20 to 24 USD/12*6oz.

EUROPE
Bilberry: Good sales activity observed during the days before Christmas. This should have allowed to absolve amounts coming from South America, that regarding 2010 cumulate exports 8'% higher in week 50. Regarding quality and condition, Chilean fruit was presented with no bigger problems, while some Argentinian and Uruguayan lots presented some condition problems, as reported in the Spanish market.

In the north of Europe, in the Netherlands, prices on import were between 11,7 and 12 Euro /12*125gr for lots with no problems. As for the South of Europe, in Spain, Chilean offer reached 10,5Euro per 1,5kg, while prices were registered down to 6,5 Euro12*125gr for lots with problems coming from Argentina and Uruguay.

Regarding the remaining berries, in the Netherlands it's possible to find Egyptian strawberry sold at 12,0 euros/12*125grs and Mexican blackberry offered at 14,5 Euro/10*250 grs.

ASIA
Bilberry: In Hong Kong / China, the market didn't show a price rebound expected for Christmas and it's not expected that sale taxes improve by the celebration of Chinese New Year. Due to that, there are some fruit stocks that are starting to show the stocking period making it more difficult to be sold, while better quality lots improved its prices regarding the previous week, reaching 18-26 USD/12*125gr, more 7 USD per box than in the previous week.
