New gauge tests orange's flavor before peeling

Oranges are a popular addition to the stocking come Christmas time. Surprisingly though, nearly 43% of all oranges used for the tradition end up in the trash according to Sainsbury's. Latest estimates show that UK households throw away seven million tonnes of food a year.

To combat this, Sainsbury's 'Waste less, save more' campaign invested £10 million into developing a device which they call 'The Goldilocks Gauge'. The test identifies the perfect balance of sugar and acid in satsumas, tangerines, easy peelers and oranges. With the test, consumers can check their fruits potential before peeling and potentially save tons of food.
