Arizona: Most citrus sold as fresh fruit

Arizona is the fourth-largest producer of fresh fruit in the United States but is unlike its cousin, Florida. Florida is the largest producer of citrus in the U.S. but nearly 90% of all their fruit goes into juice products.

Mark Isaacs, president of Sun Orchard Juicery in Tempe, gave a reason for this difference.

“West Coast fruit tends to be more appealing to the eye than East Coast fruit,” Isaacs said. East and West Coast fruits taste a lot different, he said.

East Coast fruit is usually sweeter and makes for better juicing, in part because of soil differences, growing conditions and climate.
