Ambrosia apples featured at Asia Fruit Logistica

From the product of a chance seedling to a sought-after consumer favourite, Ambrosia apples will have a booth for the very first time this year at Asia Fruit Logistica 2016.

“The Ambrosia apple story is an incredible success, and this product continues to prove itself in a very tough world marketplace,” said Christine Gross, Marketing and Business Development Coordinator for Summerland Varieties Corp. (SVC). “Everything about this apple is exceptional, and a global venue like Asia Fruit Logistica is the ideal setting to showcase Ambrosia.”

Discovered in the Similkameen Valley of British Columbia, Canada and registered by Summerland Varieties Corp in 1993, Ambrosia apples are grown and sold across North America, Europe, South America and New Zealand.

The outstanding qualities of the Ambrosia apple variety contribute to its continued success. Ambrosia apples are very attractive, boasting a unique bright red blush over a cream yellow background. This grower-friendly apple consistently produces high yields, has a high packout of top grade fruit and a long storage life.

In British Columbia, the volume of Ambrosia apples sold between 2008 and 2015 increased by 121%, while the average price increased by 8%. Ambrosia apples are by far the most popular new fruit being planted in B.C. and Nick Ibuki, Operations Manager with SVC says “Of any of the apple varieties that we grow in BC, it’s the easiest variety to manage in the orchard.”

Ambrosia apples ranked number nine in the U.S. in 2015 in total dollars against all apple varieties and had the strongest national growth of any apple in the top ten. In March of 2016, U.S. Ambrosia apple sales jumped by 93%, the fastest growth rate of any apple in the US top 25, generating the largest volume increase of any major apple variety.

Ambrosia apples are low-acid, have tender, juicy flesh with a fine, crisp texture, and honeyed flavour and they are consistently rated at the top in consumer taste tests, ensuring consumer loyalty and retailer success.

Asia Fruit Logistica guests and participants are invited to stop by the Ambrosia booth (Hall 3A B-15) to sample the apples September 7-9, 2016, Hong Kong, Asia-World Expo.
