Mangosteens arrive in Johannesburg at $25 per kilo

Mangosteens, known as the "queen of fruits," have reached Johannesburg from Southeast Asia. These tropical fruits are being recognized globally for their nutritional benefits. According to Healthline, "Mangosteen contains several nutrients with antioxidant capacity, such as vitamin C and manganese. Plus, it provides xanthones, a unique type of plant compound known to have strong antioxidant properties."

Local residents can now access mangosteens at Garden Fresh, a fruit and vegetable store in Parktown North. The store announced the arrival on Instagram, stating, "EXCITING NEWS. After YEARS of searching, Chris and I have finally got our hands on the elusive Mangosteen."

Co-founder Chris Chadderton discussed the reasons for offering mangosteens, noting, "Mangosteen is always one of those fruits that people have been asking about, and we never had them. Now that we had a slide chance of getting them, we brought them in and haven't looked back."

Chadderton described the flavor as being between a custard apple and a litchi and suggested enjoying them on their own rather than pairing them with other ingredients. He advises storing them at room temperature. The store is selling mangosteens at R450 (US$24.75) per kilogram. The availability is expected to last while the fruit is in season from June to October.
