The head of the National Food Health, Safety, and Quality Service (Senasica), Humberto Vazquez Ramirez, stated they projected Tamaulipas would increase its yellow lemon exports to the United States, Europe, and Asia to 50,000 tons this season, which will end at the end of October.
Citrus cultivation in the state is one of the main activities generating jobs and foreign exchange. Vazquez Ramirez said that Tamaulipas cultivated citrus on nearly 38,000 hectares. 4,000 hectares are devoted to producing yellow lemon and produce about 80,000 tons of fruit. The production is processed in 14 existing packing facilities in the central area.
Yellow lemon is mainly produced in the municipalities of Victoria, Güémez, Padilla, and Hidalgo. This activity is the main generator of employment in this central region of the State, with approximately 35,000 wages per year.
