The Association of Hass Avocado Producers of Peru (ProHass) forecasts that the volume of avocado exports will grow by 8 to 10% this year. "The increase in 2022 won't be as spectacular as in the previous year. We project that we'll grow considerably, but not on the scale that we are used to. Peru is already the world's second-largest Hass avocado exporter and growing at very high rates is increasingly difficult,” stated Juan Carlos Paredes Rosales, the president of ProHass.
Peruvian Hass avocado reaches more than 180 destinations around the world. The fruit is already consolidated in Europe. In South America, shipments to Chile experienced outstanding growth in 2021 and accounted for 14% of all Peruvian Hass avocado exports. "We hope to continue to supply the Chilean market in an important way, especially now that maritime freight is scarce and expensive. It's great to have a neighboring country that consumes our avocado.”
The US market is potentially very good, he said. The problems that the avocado of Mexican origin is having represent an opportunity for the Peruvian avocado to position itself better in that destination, he added.
ProHass's work in Asia focuses on increasing demand by carrying out promotional campaigns. "ProHass makes a very big effort to promote consumption in Asia, but we are talking about an immense market. We always try to grow in Asia. Demand there is still small but its potential is enormous,” he added.
Certificate of Conformity
ProHass has been voluntarily implementing a certificate of conformity in which they grant certification, through a first-level certifier, to the Hass avocado that meets the dry matter and post-harvest management standards, among other things.
"We expect that, since it's voluntary, this year a third of Peruvian Hass avocado exports will have this certificate," he stated.
