National Agricultural Research Institute readies new avocado seedlings for Tanzanian growers

Tanzania’s Minister for Agriculture, Hussein Bashe, told the National Assembly that the National Agricultural Research Institute will increase efforts to ensure that it comes up with impactful research, supporting farmers who venture into avocado cultivation.

The government in collaboration with the private sector will from next year start producing improved avocado seedlings and supply them to farmers in various regions, while providing the necessary knowledge and skills on how to grow at the same time.

Deputy Minister Antony Mavunde said the government's aim is to increase avocado farming and find more markets outside the country. Tanzania is third in avocado production in Africa after South Africa and Kenya.
