Five truffle growers in the Vaucluse department have created the first collective brand of truffles in France, “Le Diamant Noir du Vaucluse”, with specifications that guarantee their origin, pesticide-free production and especially their freshness, as truffles of this brand will be sold within the 7 days following the harvest.
The truffles are produced in Saint-Didier, Saint-Saturnin-lès-Apt, Vaison-la-Romaine, Cabrières-d'Avignon and Pernes-les-Fontaines.
“We want to take back control as producers, instead of buyers-resellers, in order to guarantee that the truffles are ripe and black. Gray or white truffles, as they are sometimes sold on the markets, are not ripe and do not have the same aroma,” explains Nicolas Monnier, president of the association “Le Diamant Noir du Vaucluse” and organic producer based in Saint-Saturnin-lès-Apt. “We practice reasoned farming, without the use of pesticides. We also want to guarantee the consumers that our truffles are fresh and out of the ground for less than 7 days.”
“We control the quality of the truffles at the point of sale, and we also check that the producers store their truffles in different boxes according to the number of days in storage. A consumer buying a “Diamant Noir du Vaucluse” truffle is guaranteed a fresh truffle. With consequences on the price: the black truffe of the Vaucluse might be the most expensive, but it is worth it!”
